Instagram is a photography app for mobile devices that allows users to take and edit photos using a variety of filters that give the photos a more artistic aesthetic. Once the exclusive domain of hip twenty-somethings, Instagram has dramatically increased its reach in recent years. A $1 billion buyout by Facebook cemented the app’s status as a major player, and since then its user base has grown to an impressive 150 million people. Make no mistake, Instagram still caters to a younger demographic, but when you consider the fact that General Electric has an Instagram account, it’s a sign that the app’s base is continuing to broaden.
About a year ago Instagram introduced video capabilities in its app, much to the delight of its users. Users can record up to 15 seconds of video using the app, and of course they can filter the video with a variety of different videos. These videos can then be uploaded to social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter, and hashtagged for indexing and search purposes.
Noting the success of Instagram, marketers have been quick to adapt the app as a platform for marketing campaigns. Perhaps the biggest advantage of Instagram as a video marketing tool is its aesthetic. As an artistically oriented app, users are on a different default mode when browsing content. While Facebook’s marketing efforts have becoming blatantly, even painfully obvious for users, Instagram has a simpler, less cluttered interface. Basically, when you’re browsing Instagram, you’re not looking at content from the perspective of “What is this trying to sell me?” Instead, Instagram allows marketers to be subtle, and more creative and artistically-minded in their campaigns, because this is what Instagram’s users appreciate. Let your creative side show on Instagram, and your campaign will get noticed. Keep up with our blog for more tips on how to use Instagram for video marketing.
