Video killed the radio star, so they say. Video, however, was not wiped out by the internet star, in fact they have come together nicely in the form of one of the most visited sites on the planet, YouTube. In fact, YouTube is now investing in creating its own video/internet stars with its new YouTube Space in Los Angeles. The website is making the new 41,000-square-foot studio complex (and three other similar complexes around the world) available for free for anyone with an idea that YouTube thinks could gain a following online.
The idea stands to reinvent the way entertainment is created. YouTube wants to use the space to create videos with professional production and the same wide appeal generated by popular movies and TV shows. New shows are even using YouTube as their sole platform of distribution, forgoing more traditional methods like broadcast and cable television.
With more than a billion page views per month, YouTube makes more than enough in advertising revenue to fund the project and cut its beneficiaries a piece of the earnings. A new YouTube show named “Video Game High School” drew more than 15 million views in its second season. Quoted on cbsnews.com, creator Freddie Wong elaborated on his choice to eschew television as the means of distribution for his show: “We’d say, whatever you [network/cable television] offer us better be a sweeter deal than what we got going on right now because what we have is the best deal of all time. We have full creative control, we have a giant audience that loves what we do, and can make whatever we want.”
YouTube continues to innovate in ways that are reshaping and redefining not just the entertainment industry but countless others, including the marketing industry.
